Memorial Day Weekend

I think we can all agree this year is flying by at warp speed. We are already coming up on Memorial Day and the start of the summer season. It is an exciting time of the year, especially here along the shores of Lake Erie where we get beautiful transitions between the seasons. We are going to have a few changes around here starting Memorial Day Weekend, but we'll get to that in a minute.

First things first, I always reflect on the reason we have Memorial Day, the freedoms we enjoy were not, and never will be free.

Right here at the store we have a daily reminder of the sacrifices made by our heroes. Just steps from our parking lot, the bridge over the Vermilion River is named after Army Staff Sgt. James P. Hunter. Seven years in, the war on terror saw our soldiers being deployed to Iraq and Afghanistan and the search for Osama Bin Laden was intensifying. Sgt. Hunter was a combat journalist telling the stories of a multi-front war on June 18, 2010 when a patrol he was on came under attack and hit by the IED that took his life.

Over a decade later and after Osama Bin Laden was killed, nearly two decades after 9/11, we lost another local hero. Berlin Heights native Navy Corpsman Maxton W. Soviak was killed by a suicide bomber that also took the lives of 12 other soldiers as the US was withdrawing from Afghanistan on August 26, 2021. The loss of these heroes from our little rural area highlights the sacrifices made by soldiers from all over the country throughout the history of American warfare, the hard fought battles won always come with flag draped coffins and broken hearts. Please honor all the fallen soldiers as you celebrate the long weekend, live a life worthy of their sacrifice. The USA is the greatest country in the history of humanity and it will always be worth fighting for, that's why we will never forget those that paid the ultimate sacrifice.
